Are Silk Bed Sheets Worth It?

Silk sheets are expensive, no doubt.

And because they are delicate, washing them requires more time and effort.  Having said that, as long as you take care of your silk bed sheets, they will actually last a long time, up to 15 years.

Silk is a natural fabric, this makes it degradable and more environmentally friendly.

Top end silk bed sheets are certified by Oeko-Tex which means it was constructed without harmful chemicals, so good for your skin, and again, good for the environment.

Silk is also hypoallergenic, and has some antibacterial properties, which means it is naturally resistant to bed mites or other microorganisms you might usually find in your bedding, increasing the longevity of your bedding.

There are some reports of the 18 kinds of amino acids that are beneficial to your skin and anti-aging, but I would take that with a grain of salt.  Sleeping on a silk pillow isn’t going to magically remove your wrinkles and make you look younger.

At the same time, it can’t hurt, that’s for sure.

Silk is also naturally moisture-wicking, and it’s a cool fabric, as anyone who’s chosen to wear a silk shirt in summer can attest.

So are silk bed sheets worth it?

Well 80% or more people who have made the leap and ordered silk sheets have said they feel it was value for money and that they would definitely buy it again, even though it’s more expensive than other types of bedding.

Are Silk Sheets Good For Your Skin?

This is a tricky question to answer.

The internet is full of the anti-aging effects of silk, but it’s anecdotal and should be taken with a grain of salt.

Natural silk does have lots of proteins or compounds that have been linked to anti-aging, however how much of that makes it into the final silk fabric is anyone’s guess.

Nevermind whether your skin could really absorb these compounds simply with you sleeping on a silk pillow for 8h a night.

However, silk is hypoallergenic, and all of the top end silk bed sheets are certified by Oeko-Tex which means it was constructed without harmful chemicals, chemicals that could potentially harm your skin.

All in all, sleeping on silk is certainly better for your skin than sleeping on any other type of fabric that requires harmful chemicals to produce.

What Is Momme In Silk Fabric?

Momme – pronounced like the word noun, but with an m, so moum.

Momme (mm) is a unit used to measure the density of fabric.

Thread count is the amount of threads in a square inch, the more threads per square inch, the thicker the fabric will be, and the higher the momme.

A 19 momme silk bed sheet often has a thread count of 400, whereas a 25 momme silk bed sheet goes up to 750 thread count.  That makes 25 momme much thicker than 19 momme.

The thinner the silk, the more delicate it is and more likely to tear or rip.

The thicker the silk (25 momme), the less delicate it is, so it is more durable and will last longer.

Higher thread count also creates a smoother, softer texture, as anyone who’s ever slept under 600+ Egyptian cotton sheets can attest.

What Is The Best Momme Weight Of Silk Bedding?

For bedding, never go below 19 momme, and if you can afford it, buy 22 or 25 momme silk bed sheets, it will cost more but last longer.

What is Mulberry Silk?

Mulberry silk is very simply silk produced by silkworms who were fed mulberry leaves.

Is Silk Ethical?

Silkworms spin themselves into a silk cocoon, which is then used to create silk threads, which in turn is spun into fabric.

Very few people realise that there is a small living creature inside the cocoon, half way in the process of becoming a moth.

This creature (the pupa) is killed by steaming or boiling before you can start processing the silk cocoon.

In other words, there is no such thing as cruelty free silk. A living creature died to make your silk bed sheets.

Are Silk Bed Sheets Hot?

No. Silk is a cool fabric that doesn’t hold on to heat like wool or polyester does.

Can You Wash Silk Sheets?

For all silk products, whether that’s bedding or clothing, you should only ever hand wash it, or use the hand wash setting on your machine.  Most washing machines have a Silk/Wool setting, that’s what I use for my silk products.

Due to the delicate nature of silk, you should wash it gently and slowly in lukewarm water, your washing machine’s Silk/Wool setting will take care of this.

Use a special Silk detergent instead of your usual laundry detergent.

Hang to dry without direct sunlight.  If you are careful, you can try to use your tumble dryer, but use the cool setting, it should be a gentle cycle, and don’t do it for long.

In fact, I personally wouldn’t use a tumble dryer.  Think about it this way, considering how much you’ve paid for your silk bedding, why risk it?  Treat it gently and carefully so your purchase can last as long as possible.

Iron when slightly damp using a cool setting, and only iron on the inside/wrong side of your bedding.

THXSILK Silk Bed Sheet ONLY

silk bed sheetssilk bed sheets

This option from THXSILK is for the fitted sheet only, so more aimed at those people who don’t sleep under a sheet (like me), but still want the benefit of a silk sheet to sleep on.

A set of 4 pieces can be very expensive, with most sets costing around $400 depending on the brand, so buying single items of bedding can be more affordable as you can choose what you want to buy, and only make your purchase when you have the spare cash.

Having said that, when you buy the set, you do reduce the overall price per item, whereas buying the sheet by itself makes it more expensive than it would be as part of the set.

ZIMASILK Silk Bed Sheet ONLY

silk bed sheetssilk bed sheets

For the ZIMASILK sheets, buying just a single sheet instead of the pack of 4 pieces might be more beneficial for your budget.

They actually sell this as either a fitted or flat sheet, but they do have less colour choices than others, and they are a teeny bit more expensive than some of the other options here.

Pros:

  • This sells as either a single Fitted Sheet or a single Flat Sheet
  • $ $ $
  • Limited colours
  • Queen and King sizes only
  • Oeko-Tex certification means it was constructed without harmful chemicals
  • Mulberry Silk
  • 19 momme
  • Matching bedding available:  pillow cases, etc
  • Buying the sheet as a single item seems far more expensive than buying the pack that contains 4 pieces (flat & fitted sheets, 2 pillow cases).

Cons:

  • A bit more expensive than the other brands
  • Limited colours and sizes

MYK Silk Bed Sheet ONLY

The MYK bed sheets are currently the most affordable option on this page, and you can buy it as either a fitted or flat sheet, in Queen and King sizes.

They do have matching options like pillow cases, but you still get 100% mulberry silk with an Oeko-Tex certification making them the best value for money option reviewed.

Pros:

  • Best silk bed sheet for: value for money
  • This sells as either a single Fitted Sheet or a single Flat Sheet
  • $
  • Comes in 5 different colours
  • Queen and King sizes only
  • 100% Mulberry Silk

Editor’s Choice for the best silk bed sheet – Orose 3 Piece Silk Bed Sheet Set

silk bed sheetssilk bed sheets

The Orose silk bed sheet set is one of the few options I could find that sells as a set of 3 pieces, so you get a fitted sheet plus 2 Oxford style pillow cases.

I personally can’t be bothered to sleep under a flat sheet.

I sleep under a comforter/duvet, so I don’t need the flat sheet like someone who sleeps under blankets, as the flat sheet will keep your blankets cleaner for longer.

Since it does not include a flat sheet, and judging by the prices for the 4pcs packs, it’s more cost effective than buying the sheets separately, or as a pack of 4 pieces (fitted, flat, 2 pillow cases).

I also think that sometimes a silk flat sheet can cause your bedding to slide off the bed, so no flat sheet is a bonus in my mind.

Pros:

  • Best silk bed sheets for:  people who don’t need a flat sheet
  • 1 Fitted Sheet + 2 Pillow Cases (Oxford Style)
  • $ $ $
  • Comes in 13 different colour choices
  • 4 different sizes:  Full, Queen, King, California King
  • Mulberry Silk
  • 19 momme
  • 400 thread count
  • Since it does not include a flat sheet, and judging by the prices for the 4pcs packs, it’s more cost effective than buying the sheets separately, or as a pack of 4 pieces (fitted, flat, 2 pillow cases).
  • Since you don’t have a flat sheet, you’ll have less of a problem with your bedding sliding off the bed.
  • Bedtime Specialist Stamp of Approval (rate out of 5):  5

Cons:

  • Since you don’t have a flat sheet to sleep under, you may miss the full luxurious feeling from sleeping between 2 silk sheets.

Editor’s Choice

Our choice is the Orose 3Pcs 100% Mulberry Silk Fitted Sheet Set

Because it’s a 3 piece instead of a 4 piece set, the price is more reasonable but you still get all the luxury benefits of the silk sheet and pillow cases.

It’s also 100% mulberry silk, and 19 momme.  You definitely do not want to go lower than 19 momme for bedding.

In my opinion, buying a single silk sheet is just not particularly cost effective, and it seems that suppliers deliberately price single sheets in such a way to make the 3 or  4 piece sets seem more affordable or reasonably priced.

Having said that, if you want to have the full 4 piece set, and are willing to spend more money, then go for the THXSILK 4 Pcs Silk Sheet Set with 2 Pillow Cases.

The company just has the best customer service and their products are amazing.

Since you are buying new sheets, perhaps it’s time for a new mattress or a mattress topper for that extra level of luxury.
